Congratulations to the Talen Negotiating Team and Talen Union members for their push in achieving a fair contract and raising the standard GWI’s.  The unity among the members and great ballot return is refreshing to see.

Local 1600 has created a Grievance Resolution Committee to review past grievances that need attention.  This committee will assist in the grievance procedure partially due to the loss of the Federal Mediation step that is currently unavailable from the Federal Government. Some grievances that were held in abeyance or not settled at the grievance resolution meeting will be moving to the committee for review.

Year to date, I have four termination grievances that have taken priority. These are time consuming, costly, and stressful for all involved.  Once the company moves to terminate, it is difficult to get them to reconsider short of arbitration.  This doesn’t mean we aren’t working on other grievances and matters that are important.  Time limits are in place and at times it is necessary to extend them.

The rumor is we may have multiple classes of T&D Helpers and Electrician Helpers for 2026.  A LTN bargaining unit trainer canvass has been distributed and interviews will be soon.  This is good news; however, we are still losing members to retirement and other opportunities. A group of five bargaining unit employees met and have provided unofficial proposals to help retain employees, close some gaps between utility and contractor, address RTC and JTWA issues, and help reach the desired Vision that you see hanging in the service centers.  The lack of interest in Troubleman promotions and failed attempts to hire externally for Journeyman Linemen and Troublemen are proof that a better package is needed to get where we need to be.  It won’t be for lack of Union effort if we cannot get things completed prior to contract time.  As stated in my previous and will be in future newsletters, it is not too early to prepare and plan for negotiations in 2027.  The way to achieve improvements and fair contracts is through unity and support, and to refrain from division.

We have not heard any additional information on electricians assisting in permit holding for mutual assistance crews during storms.  The last correspondence that I have had with the company on this was in August.

Violations of the proper use of equipment, PPE, procedures, and theft of time are landing employees in RBP and termination.  Watch out for your coworkers and speak up and use time-outs to be sure you’re compliant, and most importantly, safe.

Sadly, our sister company had a fatality while working on their system on November 6th.  Even though we never met him, this one was exceptionally difficult to hear.  It is too close to home. Please keep his family and coworkers in your thoughts and prayers and commit to extra caution and focus on safety.  If you would like to help the family financially, Help a Hero has an online benefit set up.

Once again, thank you to the Stewards and Chiefs that do their part.  Your effort is greatly appreciated.

Merry Christmas to everyone; I hope you can find time to enjoy the Holiday season with your family and friends.
